The Inspiring Use of Big Data in Fashion

Two weeks ago we attended a meetup called Big Sexy Data where the panelists put on the table the way some fashion brands are using the data to decide the direction of their business.

Two weeks ago we attended a meetup called Big Sexy Data with the following panelists: Elizabeth Canon (Fashion Collective), Doreen Bloch (Poshly), Loree Lash-Valencia (WGSN INstock) and, the organizer, Liza Kindred (Third Wave Fashion). We found the panel so interesting because they put on the table the way some fashion brands are using the data to decide the direction of their business.

Viktor Mayer-Schönberger and Kenneth Cukier define Big Data as “Our recent ability to collect and analyse much more data about a particular issue than ever before to gain new insights and offer innovative products and services. It will affect all sectors of our economy and all aspects of our existence, from business to healthcare to education.”

In fact, creators always move faster than consumers and the Big Data gives them reasons to keep going or not with a product, a trend or a brand. When a designer decides to start a business it’s quite difficult to understand and respond to the latest trends. But if they make an active listening on the Internet, they would be capable to deliver the right products at the right price and at the right time.

Another use of Big Data in fashion is to define the product categories of a website. Have you thought in how difficult is to understand the fashion argot? How do we call it: it a blazer, a coat, a cardigan or a suit jacket? If we want our costumers to find the products in an easy way at a website, we need to know which words are they using.
